Dear Lot Owners,
We believe the current state of our lakes is a direct result of the new solar farm, and we are actively working with the Powhatan County Administrator to resolve this issue.
A letter has been sent out, and a formal complaint has been filed with the Department of Environmental Quality (DEQ).To track important dates and actions being taken, please click on our events tab.
We appreciate your support and will continue to provide updates as we work toward a resolution.
Sincerely, Your Lake Shawnee Lot Owners Association

Lake Shawnee Chemical Test Results
All samples were taken at the beach areas. Lower Lake: copper is 0.001 mg/l, lead is less than that - all safe levels for swimming. Nitrate readings were 0.10 mg/l, phosphorus was 0.025 mg/l and total
phosphate was 0.0766 mg/l - safe levels. Total coliform was greater than 2419.6 MPN/100 ml and E. coli was 154MPN/100 ml - these levels are high for total coliform and a little high for E. coli, probably from the geese. Middle Pond: copper and lead were less than 0.001 mg/l - safe. Nitrate was less than 0.10 mg/l and phosphorus was 0.046 with total phosphate being 0.141 mg/l - safe. Total coliform was 2420 MPN/100 ml – high, and E. Coli was 9 MPN/100 ml - a little high. Upper Pond: copper and lead levels were less than 0.001 mg/l - safe. Nitrate was less than 0.10 mg/l and phosphorus were 0.022 mg/l with total phosphate 0.0674 mg/l - safe for all parameters. Total coliform was greater than 2419.6 MPN/100 ml – high, and E. Coli was 13 MPN/100 ml - a little high. Bottom line is the ponds should be safe to swim in, just don't ingest the water and don’t feed the geese, particularly at the beach/swimming areas.
April 17th: Water testing begins
On April 8th, the board held an emergency meeting with representatives from Dominion to discuss potential solutions for improving the condition of our lakes. While we are still awaiting full details, the board did vote to move forward with third-party, unbiased testing of the water and aquatic life. We expect that testing to begin next week.
We also plan to meet with Dominion again within the next two weeks to finalize a plan of action—both to restore the health of our lakes and to ensure safeguards are in place to prevent future issues.
As of March 24, 2025, the board has engaged with key stakeholders, including Dominion VA Energy, to work toward a solution for addressing our current water quality issues. .
This past Friday 3/14/25, Milton Deson, Wayne Sharpe and Travis Keith met with two Powhatan County Officials and one State Official concerning the condition of our lakes related to the new solar field. Friday after they met they were going to perform a detailed inspection on the property of the solar farm. This inspection will include making sure they are within proper guidelines. They were also going to be doing testing concerning the overflow from their retention ponds and determine if the water coming out of those were at safe levels. The report is supposed to be finished Thursday or Friday of this coming week. We will post all information that we find out on the report as soon as possible. It is very crucial that people continue to pay their dues so that we will have the funds to do what needs to be done so that we can get the lakes back to safe and beautiful level we all enjoy.
With summer gatherings at the beaches, our annual neighborhood cookout and and collaborative work projects there are abundant opportunities to forge new friendships and strengthen existing bonds.
In our neighborhood, we cherish a rich blend of long-time residents who have been here since its inception, alongside newer faces who have joined our community. Together, we cultivate a sense of belonging and camaraderie that goes beyond mere neighborly interactions; it feels like family. We take pride in looking out for each other, fostering strong bonds, and creating a welcoming atmosphere that defines our shared home.
